May 22 Laura Marling At Amoeba, Monday May 20th 2013
Live, Laura is very serious, meticulous, concentrated on her playing, emerged in her art, only cracking a smile when her guitar is out of tune, ‘I should get another guitar’,

May 22 Some Thoughts On The Doors On The Death Of Ray Manzarek
They got their band sound from the keyboards, it is still their most distinctive element and it is the break on “Fire” that made Morrison a superstar sex symbol. Also, with those sideburns and shades, Ray was an important visual element.

May 22 Watch Beck Perform New Songs In Santa Cruz California
Of course, some avid fan did a recording of some of the new ones and you can watch ‘Sorry’ and ‘Heaven’s Ladder’ below, filmed by someone who must have been just below Beck’s nose. ‘Sorry’ is rather upbeat with a catchy chorus ‘Used to be happy/ Used to be laughing’ and a very-Beck bridge, but nothing really memorable lyrics-wise

May 22 Your Music Stinks
This of course got me thinking about pizza…..and music. Imagine if you will scented CD’s. Now granted we also don’t use CD”s anymore but with the resurgence of vinyl who knows- CD’s can make a comeback and when they do- they should be smell infused!

May 22 Tom Petty Begins His Beacon Residency To Raves
The Heartbreakers are such a great band that I might very well be wrong , hearing these old pros jam together could well be a revelation, it could well be a Southern Crazy Horse. Or it could be a tremendous bore.

May 22 Disco Lives, Punk Not So Much
From Johnny Taylor to Chic, all these beats are used over and over again like DNA building blocks. When you hear “Love To Love You baby”, if you can get past the wall of synths and the humming metal sensuality, you left with a bass throb and a drum pattern and it is that which is lifted and reused

May 22 Chicago’s Riot Fest; Is This Line Up Legit?
Riot Fest 2013 has a lineup that is almost surreal. Brand New, Fall Out Boy……Selector? Bayside, All Time Low..Blondie? Its as if they planned the mother and child reunion right there. Three days at a fair price

May 22 George Strait: 60 #1′s At 61!
Strait is great despite being ornery cuss, he has that rare ability to be always always very good and when you are very good that often it is a form of greatness

May 22 Hear Ye – What rock nyc Is Listening To 5-22-13
Personally, I’m disappointed in the Daft Punk album. Both Casablancas and Williams have written superior songs than these, Williams obviously, but the Julian track is as good as a lesser number on his solo album. As for the Doors, still in mourning. B.o>B. is pretty good, minor stuff but it does the job And finally, who though Darius Rucker would beat out Keith Urban?

May 21 Balance and Composure at Skate and Surf Saturday May 18th, 2013 Reviewed
As soon as they stepped on stage, and crowd pushed forward. Luckily I was to the side and wasn’t being swallowed by all the people. There were a lot of fans in attendance; the majority of the crowd knew the words, and I was one of em

May 21 Spotify Streams At Four Cents A Dance
So who gets 2 Million streams? I just took a look and Macklemore and Lewis did 3.7M streams of “Can’t Hold Us”, so that makes about $160,000 in revenue of which the band get MAYBE 25%.

May 21 Not With The Band: When And Why We Love Sad Songs
Curiously, we have a tendency to think that uplifting music or some other upbeat stimulus would cheer us up in this case, effectively wouldn’t you think to console a friend who is going through a bad break-up by bringing him to some cheerful event for example? But hell no, this research totally contradicts the common opinion

May 21 Why The Return of The Skate and Surf Festival Left Me Unimpressed
Apparently these guys were on a different time zone and every act was behind an hour. Sad news for labels like Fearless Records who tweet Mayday Parade (aka ‘Breadsticks’) is on at 7:15 and they come on after 8. Seriously, how amateur can you be? I have been to so many festivals and theyre precision timing.

May 21 rock nyc Comes Alive Episode Seven: “With Your Ears”
It was fun to read, Helen writes with a great deal of energy and the article itself is very clear and extremely well constructed, flipping from one generation of women to the other from hippies to punks and finally to the child who encapsules all of it.

Silver Lake Will Host The Independent Label Market On Saturday November 3rd

I knew I was living in the center of the world when it comes to music, … independent music, … independent labeled music! There are music stores everywhere (Vacation Vinyl, Origami Vinyl, High Fidelity, Rockaway records, Amoeba music, and these are only the ones in my neighborhood!), renown music labels and music clubs abound, three quarter of the population is involved with the music business and when one of the biggest bands in the world, Radiohead, decides to release a newspaper in a few locations world wide, Silver Lake is among them.

A new event will elevate Silver Lake as the capital of the independent music even more, as the hipster neighborhood will host the Independent Label Market on Saturday November 3rd. The event will bring together the founders of famous Independent Record Labels to sell their new vinyl products directly to the public.

The market started in London in 2011 but this will the second time it occurs in the US, and a first visit to the West coast. It will take place at the Micheltorena Elementary School, and will see a host of exclusive releases, artist appearances among other things. This is what they posted on Facebook:

‘As the music industry embraces mp3s and a more digital strategy, Independent Label Market is proving to be an valuable reminder of how music retail can be a social affair; people hanging out together as a community and buying records.'

These are the exhibitor-vendors already announced, but many more will be joining the market: 100% Silk, Anti, Anticon, Burger Records, Dangerbird, Delicious Vinyl, Eenie Meenie, Everloving, Friends Of Friends, Frontier, Hit City Usa, IAMSOUND, Innovative Leisure, Mad Decent, Manimal Vinyl, Ninja Tune, Not Not Fun, Now Again, Origami, Permanent, Stones Throw.

Let’s see, Anti has Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Black Keys, and Tom Waits, Burger Records has the Black Lips, The Oh Sees, Ty Segall, Dangerbird has Fitz and the Tantrums, Minus the Bear, Silversun Pickups… who’s gonna show up?

The Wombats At Filter Magazine’s Culture Collide Festival, Sunday October 7th 2012

The Wombats are young and exuberant, the Wombats are English (from Liverpool) and you can hear it at each syllable they pronounce, which was probably another element of seduction for all these girls cheering up, front row of the Red Bull stage at the Culture Collide festival last Sunday.
