Spotify, No Friend of Joe Average
Spotify, No Friend of Joe Average

There is a great debate going on.  Spotify is about to hit Canada and hurray they no longer will have to bootleg it.  Some people find Spotify to be the messiah of music.  Anything you want to hear anytime you want to hear it.

Spotify is the music lovers dream come true.  The problem is it’s an educated persons dream come true.  If you know about music (and you know how to spell), why hot diggity you’re all set.  But what if you’re not the obsessed music fan?  What if you don’t know who sang that song that goes ‘la la sha boom bah’?

You’re doomed.

You simply cannot bypass that silly search in Spotify. Spell a word wrong, it won’t help.  Don’t know the title- forget it, know the title but not the band? Here’s a list of 2000 songs with that title- good luck.

Now don’t get me wrong I use Spotify daily. It’s a great tool and a good friend but it’s not enough for me.  I need variety and I don’t want some hack kids ‘’playlist’ or some ‘mood enhanced’ song scroll.

I want to turn the thing on and I want a genre non stop til I tell it otherwise.  I need radio.  I need the variety and the options that Spotify doesn’t offer me.  I don’t want the whole album by Pitbull I want 1 song and maybe some Sean Paul, that’s a joke of course but you get my drift.  Spotify is too streamlined and precise for a hack like me.

Which is why I have fired up Pandora again.  Now I can chose stations that play a certain genre and it will offer up a variety without my having to think at all.  This week alone I have hung out in Britpop and 80’s Alternative (though Journey came up in the 80s alt..that was a tweaker) and I’m quite pleased.

I no longer use iTunes at all.  I have it of course and I have tons of stuff on it but I have no use for it and the 1.29 is silly anyway.    Poor iTunes, its doomed.

Back to Spotify.  I love the green circle and I love being able to pull up a tune on a whim or by request (please provide proper spelling)   I searched for ever for ‘’Follower of Fashion” .. couldn’t find it forever.  Why?  I forgot the stupid “Dedicated”.  Look I don’t have time and I’m not like you I don’t complain but really someone needs to tweak their search engine -like now.

So soon we can say “Welcome Aboard Canada” as they hop on the Spotify train-  but honestly it’s just not perfect enough for me.
