I almost went to the prom committee at my school and asked them if we could have Jacob Coma DJ at our senior prom this year. But then I realized we're poor and this guy is across the damn country. A kid can only dream.
I've known about the Los Angeles, Beyond Zilla Records DJ Jacob Coma for a while now through one of my favorite apparel shops Umbrella Clothing. Coma actually helped organize and establish Umbrella's bewildering and fist-pumping Dubcast. His monstrous mix "My Addiction" is one of the best dubstep mixes I've heard in a while, since most of them I get sick of and turn off. Right from the intro, I can feel the electricity already building up through my body, anticipating a drop so powerful I'd eventually pass out. The drop was intense and trance-like, pulling and dragging me in like a fish caught on a hook. But the last seconds of the song were abruptly accelerated. My enervated body had fired up once more; the fanatical energy bombarded by Coma's fast, thundering beats had my heart-rate going wild. Who needs circuit training?
It's difficult as a DJ to bring out specific traits in your music that reflect yourself as a creative individual, without having your music sound bland or repetitive. So many dubstep DJs, whether just starting out or already knee-deep in the game, struggle with mustering their own individualistic sound. A lot of DJs don't understand how to conserve their sound so that it belongs to them and them only. But with every clatter, every clash, every rumble, and every roar of "My Addiction," you can tell Jacob Coma has an innate, natural ability for music.
I would love to watch him live and see exactly how he brings his music to life. I would definitely not miss a show had the opportunity come my way. Jacob Coma is surging through the dubstep universe with a wobble in one hand and a drop in the other.
