Back in the day there was Boston, There was LA and there was New York.  If you were a punk you signed on the X to be part of one of these 'scenes'.  By doing so you pledged allegiance to your turf.  You supported your locals, you represented when the 'nationals' showed up so that your city would be the most notorious.

There was a rivalry at the time that got many a fist fight started.  As someone who did time in both the Boston and the New York scene I can tell you first hand that Boston had the most psychotic scene of all.  Fueled in Beer and bad accents the 'straight edge' scene came to late and was hidden in a Bud light can.  Clubs popped up and disappeared and wandering skinhead were always around to help a gal out.  Hell, they were there to help themselves to pretty much anything and since the scene wasn't very bright, half of them didn't even know what a real 'skinhead' was.  But they looked tough and their Doc Martins were laced in white. 

I bailed out of there.  I used Boston as a playground til I got brave enough to venture in to New Yorks scene.  Boston was drooling, bloody and dumb. New York didn't need to bleed they were too fast, too smart and too far ahead.

But tributes must be paid and this film looks fantastic.  The youtube description says it all:

Unlike earlier films that were centered on the members of the bands, this film delves into the social and communal aspects of that particular era. The community, culture, straight edge and DIY (Do it yourself) ethic of the time are all explored in the film. Never before seen archival footage, photographs, interviews and dramatizations make up the body of the film.

Go see it, Premieres April 27th at the Independent Film Festival Boston Friday April 27th. Tickets will be going on sale in mid April with the link on the films Facebook site.  I don't want to relive it but it looks great and a real labor of love.  There is something to be said about those of us who survived those days, though I'm not sure what that word would be…God I hope I'm not in one of the scenes…
