Beck is currently producing Sonic Youth Thurston Moore’s upcoming solo LP ‘Benediction’. With the help of Tortoise and others, both artists have spent part of the summer doing a Yanni cover album for Beck’s Record Club, and I am still wondering what all this was about exactly.
Moore, in a Philadelphia Weekly interview, said that his album was recorded at Beck’s home studio in Malibu, and will feature his friend singing and playing.

Harpist Mary Lattimore and violinist Samara Lubelski are also playing on the record ‘quite extensively and very, very beautifully’ according to Moore, who added that ‘Beck really put them through the paces. You got to keep those classical musicians in place, yo.’
For the anecdote, both artists stayed in Malibu at the home of Mike D. from the Beastie Boys.

On her side, Mary Lattimore declared to the Philadelphia daily news that ‘she had the parts written for Moore’s record, but Beck had good ideas that enhanced them, so it was a true collaboration in the end.’ She also had this to say about Moore: ‘[he] was the coolest to work with and gave Samara and me loads of freedom and trusted where we were going with his songs.’

So now we have to wait a few months to listen to the result. Beck and Thurston look alike a little bit, so they should also invite Michael Cera to form a look-alike trio.
