May 17 Regina Spektor At United Palace Theater, Tuesday, May 15th, 2012 Reviewed
The set was so well paced but it was hard not to be. Regina has so many great songs but is really a schticky chick: she pulls out the Music Hall “Sailor Song” and is as willing to go deep into her Russian roots and pull out a gypsy folkie refrain as an glammy popness or a classical U Turn.

May 17 And Now, CBGB The Movie
But wow they are really re-launching this CBGB thing full time! A new location, a music festival and now a movie, it is difficult not to see an exploitation of the famous name behind all this

May 17 Lady Gaga Flesh Dress 2
I’m not quite sure why I am even giving this the time of day, its really just a pathetic attempt at shock cuz it isn’t shocking me. Wear an outfit of human skin then maybe I’ll turn my head- this is just sad and desperate.

May 17 Conor Oberst’s “One Of My Kind” Reviewed
The movie closes with Conors scribbled lyric and him sitting and singing it, “I can’t live here but I’ll I’ll probably die here…” he moans. It is terrific. Better than anything on the last Bright Eyes

May 17 Jay-Z Endorsing Obama’s Statement About Gay Marriage
There was obviously some part of calculation in Obama’s decision to speak in favor of gay marriage, it was a very good thing to do, but it is a little laughable when you remember the president’s less-than-pro-gay-marriage declaration when he met with pastor Rick Warren in 2008:

May 17 Doctor Don Henley, Berklee School of Music Gives Honorary Degrees
Should there not be some sense of musical education? Should there not be more than just a boat load of standards? Apparently not. Maybe they were available for graduation weekend so they booked them since there were slim pickin’s?

Musically, it is awesome. T-Rex, Curtis Mayfield, Barry White and of course, the one and only Alice Cooper in a cameo.

May 17 Lady Gaga Forced To Cancel Sold Out Gig In Jakarta Because of Muslim Protesters
What can I say, these people live in another century, in another geological period, they keep their women under Burkas, so Gaga in full bra may come as a shock indeed. Muslim extremists have the biggest problem in the world with sexuality, as they come just behind the American Santorum-type.

Mick Jaggersits on a tiny stage with the Ghost of Rock and Roll Future, upstart hipster frauds Arcade Fire, the pathetic excuse for current Ghost of Rock and Roll Present Foo Fighters, and The Ghost of Rock and Roll Past Jeff Beck.

who will be providing the figures and why would they open their books and, how does this effect Pandora, where the music is programed more like a radio? What;s to stop a rock band giving bucks to Pandora for additional airplay which will push them further up the charts?

May 17 To See Or Not To See? Bon Iver At Radio City (Plus Setlist)
Justin Vernon is a lugubrious bore but his songs can hook you if you don’t have your guard up and while his falsetto at first sounds a form of torture Obama has made illegal against Al Qaeda terrorists (or soldiers: tomatoes, tomartoes), it has grown on me after being inescapable for years

it’s so bombastic and theatrical it could be an Arcade Fire tune sung by Nick-Cave-meets-Ziggy-Stardust, whereas its title is so long it could compete with any Fiona Apple’s song.

Heartbeat – Why Do You Skip ? By Mary Magpie

For my science fair this year, I chose the problem “How do different types of music effect your heart rate?” Here are my results so far:

(Keep in mind normal rate for those 10yrs old and up is 60-100 beats per minute)

Showtunes- 1 min of Wicked- “Defying Gravity”-84 beats per min
Control- 1 min of silence- 90 beats per min
Classical- 1 min of Beethoven-”Fur Elise”-96 beats per min
Country-1 min of Taylor Swift-”Teardrops on my Guitar”-102 beats per min
Pop-1 min of All Time Low- “Hello, Brooklyn”-110 beats per min
Hardcore-1 min of The Devil Wears Prada-Reptar, “King of the Ozone”- 122 beats per min

A work in progress, I’ll keep you posted on further results. As you can see Wicked nearly killed me.

Make em Laugh: Helen Bach remembers the great movie musical "Singing In The Rain"

Singing in the Rain has to be one of the most engulfing movie of all time. The story line is simple enough, silent screen stars Lockwood and Lamont are forced to make ‘talkies’ now that “The Jazz Singer” is a hit and has sound. Problem is Miss Lamont has a terror of a voice and ‘The Dueling Cavaliers” has to be not only a talkie but a musical.

Oh what to do!? Cue dashing leading man Don Lockwood(Gene Kelly) and his sidekick Cosmo Brown (Donald O’Connor), together they cook up a scheme to overdub the horrid cackle of Lina Lamont (what a dish Jean Hagen was). Adorable Kathy Selden (fantastically sweetly played by Debbie Reynolds) a spunky little chorus girl is just the gal to do it! Of course this causes all sorts of chaos and leads to true love.

Like every film should.

The difference in this cookie cutter story line is the work of Gene Kelly. A dashing star with a great voice and some insane comedic timing. Coupled with Donald O’Connor this duo takes a rather bland story and vamp it up with an energy and charismatic spin. I want to be in this movie. If only to jump the sofa. There are segments which almost don’t fit, such as the dream sequence with Cyd Charisse, that chick was cool as cool gets. The grand scale of this Broadway Melody is so visually alive I can watch it over and over again.

Songs from this film are classics in every sense of the word. Who among us has not splashed a puddle singing the title song or belted out “Good Morning!”? “You Are My Lucky Star”, should be sung by EVERY man to the woman they love no matter how shitty their voice may be cuz EVERY girl should be told so:

You’re all my lucky charm
I’m lucky in your arms
You’ve opened Heaven’s portal
Here on earth for this poor mortal
You are my lucky star

“Make Um Laugh” and “Moses Suppose” are cornball songs performed just as folksy but it works in this forum. Donald O’Connor has the most stunning facial expressions and almost treats this role like a running gag, its almost mocking in its delivery.

In 1952 as now, movies were an escape. Giant over the top cinematic vacations from the real world. The difference is back then we escaped to good, today we escape to explosions or new galaxies. Singing in the Rain was the story of the underdog. You could be a bit player in the chorus line and end up the star of the show. And your friends would be there to make sure you got the acknowledgement you deserved.

Are We Not Geeks? Helen Bach claims it's not too late…

Devo were a bunch of geeks from Ohio. If you think Weezer were stereotypical nerds these boys were the epitome of locker dwellers. Armed with keyboards and a really disturbing mentality off they went spreading the words of De Evolution thus the name. DEVO. Geek rock extraordinaries claiming that mankind was not growing and EVOLVING but rather slipping backward DEevolutionizing. Meh, whatever.

I first remember seeing a film short which may have been on Saturday Night Live, if my research holds correct it was approx 1978 and it scared the hell out of me. I was 11.

Even though the industrial jump suited black shaded boys scared the beejesus out of me they also had a great sound. I purchased Are We Not Men? We Are Devo! With my birthday money.

I didn’t ‘get’ alot of it but “Uncontrollable Urge” was my favorite. How weird it sounded (and still does) Musically it was nothing I had head before and trust me nothing my Van Halen fan friends had ever encountered. Devo was one of those bands you took alot of heat for liking. Even in the early days to dig them was rather hush hush. Uncontrollable Urge was so fast listen to it now its insane. Ok dorked and dated sounding but oh my God how many hours were spent pogo dancing around the house on this one. Just hearing it at this moment jets me to that time. Speaker shattering. People were listening to Abba or the Bee Gees I was insanely thrashing to this. Freakin great useless lyrics spoke sang by Mothersbaugh…….who……….I thought………was cute. Sigh

“Gut Feeling” was another AMAZING song. Theres that word again! But honestly this song is so freakin fun. I hate that this band became a joke with “Whip It “(which I wont even discuss) “Gut Feeling” was a melodic and gradual rise song again like nothing I’d heard before and yes I was a bit to young to ‘get it’ but it didnt matter. The keyboard work is so very pretty almost serious in its tones. ‘ I look for silvery linings but your rotten to the core’, cant even tell you how many times Ive said that. loved how it lead into “Slap Your Mammy”

“Praying Hands” was another that stood out on this disc for its spacey sorta sound. And the blasphemous again that I didnt ‘get’.. I do now though eek!

Duty Now for the Future wasn’t as good but the shock and awe had mellowed by then. Id head the genre and liked it but the wow factor dulled “Devo Corporate Anthem” was fun enough but the version of “Secret Agent Man” is what made me want to learn to play bass (and love the song Peter Gunn) The vocals here are really pretty 60s tinny I love the tunnel sound. I think Gerry Casale sings this one, he should have sung more. He was also cute by the way.

The killer on this was the song “The Day My Baby Gave Me a Surprize”, again with the futuristic bubble machine sounds. I think Mothersbaugh vocals were just so weird. There was no harmony There was nothing but starkness and the WA oooooo, its pretty damn catchy.

“Wiggly World” was anthem like and also a major repeat in my collection. I had to line up the needle just right on this one but it had the more familiar guitar sounds. This song drove my mom insane by the way. Which hearing now I can see why. It has no flow and sounds like toy guns This does have some killer lyrics though. Wow just hearing it now gets me pretty fired up. Good one

I saw them live July 19, 1979 (the Internet fucking rules that I was able to find the date amazes me!!) Stunned that I got into a bar (again WTF!) to see them. I was feeling pretty bad ass but I was also a great fan. I cant remember much of the show but again I was twelve, I do remember some guy talking to me and my brother sorta screaming at him. I wish I could remember the gig better I bet it kicked ass.

After that I lost touch with Devo, moved on to harder stuff. By “Whip It” I pretty much pretended Id never heard of them. I was Judas. But to those kids who spoke of them I could at least feel that glimmer of hope that maybe I wasnt the only person not listening to Journey. Those crazy New Wavers.. by the time neon was an accepted color I was dressed in black with a bike chain hanging from my shoulder.

But Devo will always bring me back to pogo dancing in my bedroom and my first risque bar entry.

All of the Devo boys ended up ok too, youll see Mothersbaugh and Casale on credits for films and cartoons and hell yeah I knew them way back then!
